Beginners...are
you missing the joy of teaching them?

No
matter how cute they are, beginners are work...
even these two!
They can’t do the
drills. They lack polish and
spit. You can’t use them to promote yourself. And, you
question why you
have to teach them instead of whomever.
Tennis pros love to work with advanced players. It’s fun.
It’s easy. You get to show off those perfectly honed skills
to
parents and other teaching pros.
But if you avoid the common mistakes that plague teachers, teaching
novice players can be a delight.
MISTAKES
TO AVOID WHEN TEACHING BEGINNERS:
Mistake
Number 1:
Expecting them to perform like accomplished
players.
Solution:
Expect them to perform like kids who have very little playing
experience.
Remember when you were one? How
much did you enjoy your teacher’s acts of exasperation.
Mistake Number 2:
They think they suck, you need not confirm it.
Solution:
New players see the advanced players on the other courts. They
know they lack skills. They are hoping you don’t notice. They
want
you
to ignore the miss hits and shanks.
Mistake
Number 3:
Bringing
“drill sergeant" hat to the court.
Solution:
So you are known as “old school”, well that
doesn’t
cut it with beginners. They want you to be funny, humble and gentle.
They want to be seen, affirmed and
celebrated…don’t miss these opportunities
Go to any playground. You will constantly
hear…”look it
here” A kid will even ask a total stranger to watch them
perform.
To be seen, affirmed and celebrated is to know that life is good.
Mistake Number 4:
Trotting out those same old stale drills.
Solution:
Spice up those drills. Beginners love to run, especially relay races.
They love props, too. Buy some. You might even catch yourself smiling
more often during your lessons.
Mistake
Number 5:
Paying
attention to failure instead of success.
Solution:
Count their successes instead of their failures.
Feed your student ten balls. Count the number that hit the target area.
If that number is only two accept that and tell your student that now
we will try for 3 out of ten.
