Akron After School Program Improves Student Achievement
Say Yes To Tennis presents Family Fun Day for Akron After School. Both Kids and Adults enjoyed the festivities. In fact, the kids taught their parents a thing or two about tennis fundamentals. Click on the video to see the program in action. Akron After school Program Overview10 elementary schools in after school program; six in 21st Century participate in the program. Targeted enrollment:Teacher/principal recommendation.High-risk students. Program Structure:One half hour snack and homework start.One hour of structured academic intervention (reading & math)One hour of student selected enrichment activities. Program Performance Objectives Performance Objective #1: No Child Will Be Left Behind. Goal: Increase student proficiency in reading, writing, mathematics and science.Goal: Provide multiple education options to better meet the learning needs of all students.Goal: Provide intervention and enrichment to help students perform at or above grade level. Performance Objective #2 Goal: Provide excellent customer service in all dealings with parents and the community.Goal: Enhance cooperation and communication with parents, city and civic leaders, the business community, labor organizations and local agencies. Say Yes To Tennis served over 700 of the kids enrolled in the program during the year. We provided a math tutor as well as the the tennis program every Monday thru Thursdays. On Tuesdays we provided two hours of tennis classes. In addition to the two eight week sessions we provided during the school year, We also provided tennis 15 hours of tennis for three elementary schools at the start of summer vacation. Why do I enjoy the program so much? because kids love to be seen. Go to any play ground and you will see kids showing off their talents. They will constantly say "look it here." They will even say it to a passing stranger. Our staff gets to see kids when they accomplish a task, we get to affirm them and we get to celebrate them. For a child to be seen,affirmed and celebrated is to know that life is good. Thats why I enjoy the Akron program.
