Armory for Tennis - Are you Kidding Me!?
No, I'm not kidding you. We used this National Guard Armory for one of our outreach sites. Actually we were forced to find a place to serve the kids who lived in the Norton Homes Development pictured below. We had a unique strategy to recruit the kids for our science program. Along with teaching tennis we would offer a model car program. We would provide a mentor to assist the kids with building the cars. After successful completion the kids would keep the cars. The cost of the cars along with the kits was around one hundred dollars. Needless to say, the kids were pumped.

As life would have it the kids we targeted we already involved in another program. This program had control over the multipurpose room that we were going to use. This other organization is nationally known. I'm sure you've seen there commercial on television. In any event the leaders of this organization did not want us on their turf. Understand that this organization neither teaches tennis nor do they operate a model car program. I didn't understand it. Obviously we were perceived as a threat. This does happen and often.
So what happened? We spotted a National Guard Armory right down the street. I met with the Captain. We discussed my problem and he came to my rescue. He offered his building as a site for us. We were elated. We pride ourselves in being resourceful. The rest, as they say, is history. We had a thriving tennis and model car program right there in on that asphalt floor. So when looking for places to unleash your passion to help youngsters....keep a look out for out of the way places. Perhaps even an armory.
